Silhouettes of Oklahoma

In January of 2009, I visited Oklahoma during the yearly Oklahoma City Winter Quilt Show. I bought a pattern called Oklahoma Sunsets by Janet Coggins that gave me an idea on how

to finish a quilt I started over three years ago for my wonderful friend Stacey. Stacey has a thing for windmills and I had designed and finished the center panel of the quilt, but couldn’t decide how to finish the rest of the quilt (Fig. 1).

After returning home to Maryland, with quilt pattern in hand, I laid out the rest of the quilt. I used 10 of the silhouettes from Janet’s pattern, then found pictures from which I made line drawings for the other 4 blocks. By the end of February I had the quilt top done and ready to quilt. I sent the top off to my friend in Oklahoma, Meri, who machine quilted it. When I received it back in August, I finished the binding. Fig. 2 shows most of the finished quilt. I don’t have a place to hang a quilt yet so that I can get a good full picture, but I’m working on it.

I returned home to Oklahoma in September to visit my mom, Stacey and her family and brought the quilt to her. Stacey was just delighted. I have to say that the very best part of quilting is sharing it with those you love. Silhouettes of Oklahoma was one of my most joyous creations.

I have included a couple of closeups of the blocks so you can see the details a bit better, but also to show some of the lovely quilting Meri did in order to bring out the beauty of the quilt. See Figures 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.

  1. Julie, Read every word!!! Lovely :-) You did such a wonderful job on the Oklahoma quilt that it needs to be shared widely and this is a great way to do that. Sorry I spent too much of our limited time Saturday morning talking about work :-( I wanted to hear about your trip to see Stacy and deliver the quilt, so we’ll just have to catch up when you get back from Niagara Falls, since I’ll want to hear about your trip too :-) I finished peicing the top of the embroidered/appliqued panels that my colleagues lovingly prepared for our colleague Heather and her baby due early December. It is just lovely! We will have a little ‘party planning’ meeting tomorrow among ‘us girls’ and I will bringing in their assembled handiwork for an ‘early peek’ :-) We will have an afternoon ‘baby shower’ for Heather the first week of November. Love you sis, June

  2. Hi, I can’t believe how beautiful your quilt came out! I’d love to get a photo of it for my scrapbook.
I had so much fun making the pattern and to see someone else do their version is really exciting.
    Congratulations!

    • Janet – Your pattern was the inspiration I needed in order to figure out how to finish the quilt for my friend. I saw your pattern at the OKC quilt show in 2009 and knew instantly, this was it. I still don’t have an entire picture of it, although Stacey has it hanging on the wall in her bedroom and I was home to see it just last week! Next time I am there (in Sept), I’ll get a picture of the entire quilt so I can send it to you for your scrapbook.

  3. Wow, that’s my sister Janet’s quilt pattern!! Fantastic! I love seeing it on-line. Beautiful.

    • Galen – Your sister is a wonderful quilt artist! I was so inspired by her pattern. I hope you and she are quilting buddies as me and my sister are. There is nothing as fun as sharing a quilting day together! My husband also loved this quilt. He has asked me to do another one for us, although he would like the block “The End of the Trail” as the center block. Don’t know if I will get to it this year, as I have about 6 other quilts ahead of this one, but I definately will do another. Janet’s pattern, I’m sure, has been inspiration to many quilters, especially Oklahomans!
